Social-Emotional Learning
Social-Emotional Learning
At The De La Salle School, we believe that education extends beyond academics. Our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program is designed to support the holistic development of our young men, ensuring they grow into well-rounded individuals who are emotionally intelligent, resilient, and compassionate. Our SEL program is an integral part of our mission to educate the whole child—mind, body, and spirit.
Comprehensive Counseling Services
Our counseling services are a cornerstone of the SEL program, providing young men and families with the support they need to navigate the challenges of adolescence and beyond.
Part-Time Social Worker:
We have a dedicated part-time social worker available to all young men and their families. Our social worker provides individualized support to help young men manage personal, social, and emotional issues that may arise during their time at The De La Salle School.
Individual Counseling:
Young men have access to confidential one-on-one counseling sessions where they can discuss any concerns they may have. These sessions provide a safe space for young men to express their feelings, work through challenges, and develop coping strategies.
Referral to External Resources:
When necessary, our social worker can refer young men and families to external resources and agencies for additional support. Whether it’s connecting with mental health professionals, community services, or specialized programs, we ensure that our young men receive the help they need.
FOCUS Class: A Dedicated SEL Curriculum
The FOCUS Class is a weekly social-emotional learning class designed for all grade levels at The De La Salle School. This class covers a wide range of topics that are essential to the holistic development of our young men.
Weekly Sessions for All Grades:
Every week, young men from all grades participate in the FOCUS Class, which is specifically designed to address the social and emotional needs of young adolescents. The consistent engagement in SEL ensures that young men continually build and reinforce their emotional intelligence.
Curriculum Topics:
The FOCUS Class curriculum covers a broad spectrum of topics, including:- Self-Awareness: Understanding personal emotions, strengths, and areas for growth.
- Self-Management: Developing skills to manage stress, control impulses, and set goals.
- Social Awareness: Cultivating empathy and understanding of others’ perspectives and backgrounds.
- Relationship Skills: Learning to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and build healthy relationships.
- Responsible Decision-Making: Encouraging thoughtful decision-making based on ethical standards and social norms.
- Interactive Learning:
The FOCUS Class is highly interactive, using activities such as group discussions, role-playing, and collaborative projects to engage young men. This hands-on approach helps young men apply what they learn in real-life situations, making the lessons more impactful and lasting.
Building a Supportive School Community
At The De La Salle School, we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive school community where every student feels valued and understood.
Positive School Culture:
Our SEL program contributes to a positive school culture where respect, kindness, and empathy are the norms. We encourage young men to look out for one another, celebrate diversity, and contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Family Involvement:
We recognize that social-emotional learning extends beyond the classroom. Therefore, we actively involve families in our SEL initiatives, providing them with resources and workshops to support their child’s emotional and social development at home.
- Community Partnerships:
We partner with local organizations and professionals to enhance our SEL program. These partnerships allow us to offer additional resources, guest speakers, and events that provide families with much-needed basic necessities, enrich our young men learning experiences and broaden their understanding of social-emotional topics.
Impact of SEL on Young Men Success
Research shows that young men who participate in SEL programs perform better academically and are more likely to succeed in life. At The De La Salle School, we embed SEL in our day-to-day practices to develop the skills and mindset necessary for academic success and personal well-being.
Improved Academic Performance:
Young men who are emotionally and socially supported are better equipped to focus on their studies, leading to improved academic outcomes.
Enhanced Emotional Well-Being:
Our SEL program helps young men manage their emotions, reducing feelings of anxiety and stress, and promoting overall well-being.
Preparation for Future Success:
By developing strong social-emotional skills, our young men are prepared to navigate the challenges of high school, college, and beyond. They leave The De La Salle School as confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world.
